Veteran's Day Overview

Learn about the history of Veteran's Day.

About Veteran's Day

Veterans Day is celebrated each year on November 11, and honors veterans of all U.S. wars. In 1938, legislation was passed to celebrate November 11 as Armistice Day, and was intended to honor World War I veterans, as November 11, 1918, marked the end of World War I. However, on June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veteran's Day and amended to honor veterans of all U.S. wars.[16]

If November 11 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the holiday is observed on the Friday before or the Monday after. Veterans Day is different from Memorial Day in that it honors living veterans that "served honorably, whether in wartime or peace."[16]
