About Zoo Atlanta

Zoo Atlanta is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The zoo is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Parking at Zoo Atlanta is free.[4]

Admission prices are $20.99 for adults ages 12-64, $16.99 for seniors age 65 and over, $15.99 for children ages 3-11, and free for children under the age of three. Rides cost an additional fee. An Unlimited Ride Day-Pass, for example, costs $8.50, while single ride tickets cost $2.50 each.[4]

The exhibits include hundreds of species of animals, including mammals, birds, and reptiles.[5] The park was founded in the late 1800s after a circus went bankrupt, leaving the animals behind. The animals were eventually purchased and donated to the city, which opened the zoo in April 1889.[6] Today the park hosts workshops, wildlife encounters, classes, and day camps to educate visitors and students about wildlife conservation.[7]

The zoo is also involved in conservation efforts for several species of animals around the world, including giant pandas, golden lion tamarins, Guatemalan beaded lizards, Sumatran sun bears, and gorillas in Central Africa.[8] Since its founding, staff members have discovered and named more than 40 different species of animals.[9]
