About the Seattle Underground Tour

The Seattle Underground Tour is open to the public year round, and closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The tour opens on operating days between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and closes between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tours depart every hour.[1] The tour also offers visitors a cafe and gift shop. The cafe offers sandwiches, fruit, salads, and other healthy snacks.[10]

The tour takes visitors along three underground blocks of what was once the city of Seattle. This underground city is what remains from Seattle prior to 1889, when a fire destroyed the original city and inspired officials to re-build Seattle on higher ground.[11] The tour starts at Doc Maynard's Public House and ends inside the underground gift shop, Rogue's Gallery. Throughout the tour's duration, stories are shared about the city's pioneers.[1]

Located in Pioneer Square, the Seattle Underground Tour attraction began in May of 1965, when Bill Speidel and his wife Shirley took 500 people on the first tour of Seattle's underground. Not long after this, tours were scheduled publicly, and the attraction was born.
