About Outlet Malls

Outlet malls are large shopping complexes featuring brand name stores that offer major discounts. These malls often have 60 to 200 stores all in one place.

The outlet mall concept began to take off in the United States in 1981, the year Tanger Outlets opened its first location in Burlington, North Carolina. This opening sparked the beginning of the outlet mall industry, which today features hundreds of locations throughout the United States by outlet mall companies like Tanger Outlets, Prime Outlets, Chelsea Premium Outlets, and VF Outlets. Tanger Outlets alone welcome an estimated 180 million shoppers each year, making the centers places for both residents and tourists alike.[2]
