About Focalin

Manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, Focalin is an ADHD medication available in tablet form or as an extended release capsule called Focalin XR. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2005, Focalin XR is typically administered once daily in the morning. The capsule is either swallowed whole or its contents sprinkled on applesauce.[2] Focalin tablets are also administered by mouth, and are available in three strengths: 2.5, 5, and 10 mg.[3] These tablets are typically administered four hours apart, twice daily.[4]

Focalin and Focalin XR are central nervous system stimulates, also called CNS stimulates, and treat patients by taking certain natural substances already in the brain and increasing them.[4] Due to the potential of abuse, Novartis Pharmaceuticals recommends patients not give away or sell their Focalin medication.[1] As with many medications, Focalin and Focalin XR may cause side effects in some individuals. Common side effects include nausea, headache, appetite loss, problems sleeping, loss of weight, throwing up, and dizziness. Some side effects may be serious, and the and Novartis Pharmaceuticals recommends patients contact their doctor if they experience problems with their breathing, changes in eyesight, blurred visions, or seizures.[1]

  • The official website for Focalin XR offers a savings card for up to $60 off a Focalin XR prescription each month. This is a savings of up to $720 annually. In order to access the savings, patients must print out the card from the official website, take it to their doctor to get a written prescription, and then take the prescription, along with the printed out card, to the pharmacist. Some restrictions may apply. For example, the monthly savings cannot exceed a patient's out-of-pocket expenses. Additionally, patients with Medicare, Medicaid, or living in massachusetts cannot take advantage of this offer.[6]

Anyone is eligible for the card, which is available to print from the official MedSaverCard website. The card is then redeemable at more than 60,000 pharmacies, saving patients up to 80 percent on select medications.[7]
