Promo codes are essentially online coupons. These coupon codes are used to receive special discounts, free shipping, or other promotional offers on online purchases. Some promo codes are activated by clicking on a link, but most codes must be manually input during the online checkout process to receive the discount.

Types of Promo Codes

There are different types of promo codes available on the Internet. These include:

  • Free shipping codes - Promo codes for free shipping are offered on a regular basis. Retailers may send these codes to frequent shoppers or they may be available for the general public. On National Free Shipping Day, free shipping codes are offered by many online retailers.
  • Order discounts - Many promo codes offer a flat percentage off an online order or a dollars-off discount on orders that exceed a certain amount. Codes may include savings such as $5 off an order of $25 or more or 15 percent off an entire order.

How to Find Promo Codes

  • Checking the website - One of the easiest ways for shoppers to find promo codes is to check the official websites of branded retailers periodically. For example, the online photo service Shutterfly features a Shutterfly free shipping code that is good for complimentary shipping on all orders of $30 or more. The code SHIP30 is posted directly on the Shutterfly homepage.[1]
  • Subscribing to an email newsletter - Customers who shop at certain retailers frequently can get access to online coupon codes by signing up for the company's free email newsletter. At Old Navy.com, shoppers who apply to receive free emails weekly get notice of upcoming online sales and Old Navy promo codes they can use to receive a percentage off of their orders.[2]
  • Signing up for a special customer program - Occasionally, customers who enroll in a special rewards program or shoppers' program qualify for free promo codes. Amazon.com operates several of these programs, including Amazon Prime, Amazon Mom, and Amazon Student.[3] From time to time, the company sends out special promo codes just for these shoppers. Amazon Mom members, for example, received an exclusive Kindle Fire coupon code that was good for up to $50 off a new device.
