Many museums offer free admission all year, including the Washington, D.C. Smithsonian museums. Free museums usually operate based on suggested donations. Most museums charge a fee, however, but offer visitors several opportunities to save. These include free days, half price days, free admission for those that purchase an annual membership, as well as dollars off ticket prices.

Museum discount tickets and coupons are available through the official museum website, or can be accessed online through select coupon websites. Coupons may also be available in local Entertainment Coupon Books, or inside tourist guides and brochures.

About Museums

Museums are indoor attractions where guests may view exhibits featuring art, science, and history. Some museums offer artifacts and exhibits related to local history, while others display works of art or technology created by artists. Children's museums feature both display and hands-on exhibits, allowing kids to touch and interact with features relating to science, geography, and art.

Free Science Museums

Science museums and science centers may feature free admission to the public on selected days or for specific exhibits. At the California Science Center, admission to the museum's permanent exhibits is always free to the public. [1] At the Great Lakes Science Center, visitors who are Bank of America cardholders receive free admission on the first weekend of the month as part of the Bank of America Museums on Us program.[2]

Free Children's Museums

Several children's museums offer free admission days during the year. For example, at the Indianapolis Children's Museum, admission is free on April 27, 2014, in honor of El Dia de Los Niños, and on December 24, 2014, for Christmas Eve.[3] On Thursday nights, the Children's Museum of Houston offers "Free Family Nights." From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., families qualify for free admission.[4]

Target Free Events

Target frequently offers free admission to selected museums, including children's museums on certain days each month. For example, on the first Tuesday of each month, admission to the Children's Museum of Atlanta is free to the public from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. At the Boston Children's Museum, admission is reduced to $1 for all guests during "Target $1 Family Night." A full list of the participating attractions is provided on the Target corporate website.[5]
